Parliament dissolved from midnight tonight

One of the key reforms proposals proposed by the Government and passed by Parliament was the 19th Amendment to the constitution.However the Government failed to reach a consensus on the proposed 20th Amendment to the constitution on electoral reforms. (Colombo Gazette) Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya is scheduled to hold a media conference tomorrow (Saturday) where he will announce plans with regards to the polls. The dissolving of Parliament ends the term of the coalition Government which was appointed following the January 8 Presidential elections. The Government which consists mainly of the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), was appointed for a 100 day period to address key urgent issues.However the Government remained in power beyond 100 days in order to implement key constitutional reforms, including electoral reforms. President Maithripala Sirisena has signed the gazette notification dissolving Parliament from midnight tonight and the notice has been sent to the Government Printer.The dissolution paves the way for Parliament elections to be held, most likely in August.
