The Cowgirls (36-19, 18-9 SLC) and Bearkats (22-31, 13-14 SLC) both turn their sights now to the 2018 Southland Conference Softball Tournament in Lake Charles, La., this week from Wednesday to Friday. FRISCO, Texas – McNeese senior Erika Piancastelli and Sam Houston State junior Lindsey McLeod are the Southland Conference Softball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. Honorable Mention: Moriah Strother, Nicholls; Amber Landry, Stephen F. Austin; Emma Hawthorne, Northwestern State. Hitter of the Week: Erika Piancastelli, McNeese – Sr. – UT – Carlsbad, Calif.Piancastelli registered one of the best performances of her conference career, picking up six hits in seven at bats. Five of her six hits were extra base hits including three home runs, two doubles along four RBIs, four walks, two stolen bases and six runs scored to help McNeese to its regular season series finale win over Southeastern Louisiana. With her five total bases on Friday, she broke the Southland career record, making that five conference career records she has broken this season. She ended the week with an .857 batting average, 2.429 slugging percent and a .917 on base percent. Pitcher of the Week: Lindsey McLeod, Sam Houston State – Jr. – P – Austin, TexasMcLeod turned in a record-setting weekend in helping Sam Houston clinch the final berth in the Southland tournament. The junior from Austin punched out 14 HBU hitters in a complete-game, one-hit shutout in the series opener, tying an SHSU single-game record with that mark in a 1-0 Bearkat victory. She turned around in game two and struck out two more in a two-inning save. Her second strikeout not only ended the game but was her 201st strikeout of the season. That set a new program single-season school record, breaking the mark of 200 strikeouts by Brandi Crnkovic in 2007. With a berth in the conference tournament already clinched, McLeod did not pitch in the series finale, but still finished with 16 strikeouts and only two hits allowed in nine innings of work. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
