The Barcelona Decay – [PART TWO]

first_imgConservatives are always stuck on the ideas and archaic reasoning passed unto them from their older relatives and these people who obviously controlled what the media sold to the fans and installed successive presidents used their newspapers, TV and radio stations to sell Cruijjf as “Genius, but unpredictable”, a “mercenary”, a “careless coach”.When in 1996, Johan Cruijjf was thinking about building a new winning generation to be led by Zidane and Dennis Bergkamp, he was fired right there in the dressing room at Camp Nou by the president Josep Lluis Nunez with no previous warning. The Socis got rid of the ‘strange’ person in ‘their’ club and hired Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal to continue the momentum from the Cruijjg era. Take note that this is happening presently. When things are done properly with either the La Masia producing talents or the club is making enough money to throw around, managers like Robson and Van Gaal will come in and sustain the momentum for 3-5 years. The fact is that the club’s identity and its playing style would eventually need people who believe in it so much and that will work towards improving and consistently reinventing the system, believing in the La Masia especially in midfield positions and bringing in foreign players when deemed fit to keep the team competitive. The momentum from the Cruijjf Era ended in 2000. Barça were on the verge of being bankrupt, struggled to keep their place amongst Spanish football elite, trophyless and it became so bad that in 2003 under Louis van Gaal, Barcelona didn’t finish in Champions League places (finished 6th). One-way coaches who prioritize strength over brilliance had been in charge to no success as per the choice of the Catalan ‘controllers’.There were manifestations, complaints, and protests at the Camp Nou and after leaving the club 7 years earlier, Johan Cruijjf was back supporting a relatively unknown lawyer, Joan Laporta, for President of the club. Once again the ideals and philosophy that brought massive success were of utmost importance and with Laporta winning, he chose Cruijjf as his personal advisor.Cruijjf advised that he brought in Frank Rijkaard. There were back to back league titles, a second European title and a very clear and defined return to Total Football. Also, the likes of Xavi and Puyol became more important while Iniesta was promoted from the youth team.In 2008, after a downturn in results which led to Frank Rijkaard leaving the club, Johan Cruijjf advised Laporta against hiring Jose Mourinho who was in prime position for the job. Instead, he picked an unknown manager in Pep Guardiola to continue in the methods that had brought success and what happened next could not have been imagined by Cruijjf himself. 14 trophies in four years and a total domination that European football had not witnessed since the Real Madrid of the ’50s.Pep did everything to make sure that the style, philosophy, and ideals were inculcated all over the club so as to build something that would keep the club on top for as long as humanly possible. He had meetings with La Masia coaches weekly, from the under-9s till the under-19s and always planned with them when the Masia players would make their first team debuts. In 2010, the Socis used the media and the Penyas to paint to the fans a negative picture of Laporta as being too loud, being a party animal and being too much of an independentist. They brought up Sandro Rosell, One of theirs, and once again they were in control at the top.Soon after, propaganda started coming out that attacked Guardiola, a manager that was winning trophies and never fell shy of getting to the UCL semifinals at the very least. Just like 1978, the conservatives couldn’t deal with the stature of Pep Guardiola.Conservatives believe that a man who is immensely intelligent and successful would have big flaws. They attacked Pep at every sub that led to a loss, every loss of a match or any loss of a title. Naturally, just like Johan Cruijjf, Guardiola was fed up and he decided to leave the club of his life even though he was Catalunya’s poster boy sporting wise and politically. The Socis started hiring managers who they said had the ‘Barcelona DNA’ but they chose people who would do what they were told. The likes of Cruijjf and Pep didn’t bow to them that’s why they termed then as ‘unpredictable’.Remember the momentum from the Cruijjf Era lasted 3-4 years? The five years after Pep have cloned that period. Tito was chosen to replace Pep because they said the assistants were d brains behind the two managers (Rexach & Tito). Tito won the league with 100 points but was destroyed by Bayern in a game that pointed to the fact that the midfield was aging and that the younger generation had to start getting games to gain experience. End of season, They sold the best player from the La Masia at that moment, Thiago Alcantara and brought in Alex Song. Why hold on to a young Spanish controlling creative midfielder when Alex Song is bullying everyone in the Premier League, yeah?End of season, They sold the best player from the La Masia at that moment, Thiago Alcantara and brought in Alex Song. Why hold on to a young Spanish controlling creative midfielder when Alex Song is bullying everyone in the Premier League, yeah?2013/2014, Tata Martino was brought in to replace the terminally ill Tito Villanova. The Socis used their media houses to sell the narrative of Messi being the brain behind the choice of the Argentine coach, a man that we have eventually discovered Messi had never met in his life.Messi was so dominant that Barça almost won the league but once again they were eliminated from the UCL in the quarter finals. Neymar, who is the poster boy of Rosell’s tenure had a very shy first European season. Tata left and in came Luis Enrique.Lucho never believed in the pressing and passing and possession game that had brought success. He dealt with football the way he sees life generally: a competition where you need to cross the finish line before your adversaries. Style or philosophy doesn’t matter, only winning does. To be fair, he did win. Brought in Ivan Rakitic and eased out Xavi Hernandez and Won the treble with one of the most memorable runs in Champions League history. In 15/16, Arda Turan was a baffling midfield signing considering Iniesta’s reducing influence and increasing age. The MSN thrived on Lucho’s competitiveness and the leftover momentum to win the league but fell short again in the Champions League by not still having a creative and organized midfield to beat a well drilled Atletico de Madrid.2016/2017, Of course, after a European title and 2 consecutive Liga titles, Enrique remained in charge. Madrid had just won their 2nd Champions League trophy in 3 seasons and in a bid to consolidate on the success Lucho had garnered, the board paid €55m for……………… Andre Gomes! Barcelona went into the season relying on the speed and verve Enrique and the MSN had but this time, it didn’t work out. There were results like the losses to Alaves, Deportivo and most notably a thrashing from a PSG team that couldn’t hold on to a 4-goal advantage.Lucho focused on the MSN because of their obvious qualities, but also because he wanted to win with the least possible suffering. Such a mentality makes a winning team for the here and now, but it doesn’t help in building for the future or keeping alive the identity of a club like Barcelona. That’s why in his third season, the MSN with all their goals couldn’t win any major titles. It is clear for all to see right now. The momentum from the Cruijjf/Pep Era has completely faded and even the new verve that Lucho might have brought is nowhere to be found anymore following the exit of Neymar to PSG. What is left is an unusually old team that is especially lacking in midfield. There has not been a proper rejuvenation. Since Pep left, there have been Song, Turan, Rakitic, Gomes and most recently Paulinho to replicate the successes brought by Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets and the underlying quality of La Masia.Don’t waste energy criticizing Valverde. He’s been appointed by the conservatives because he has ‘Barcelona DNA’ but most especially because he’s one who they can control. He’ll be having to make do with what and who is given to him by the same board that haven’t shown any signs of understanding how to sustain the level Barcelona were when Pep left in 2012.Will it take another spell of drought before Barcelona are back to the ideals that brought so much success? Or will the Catalan Socis react again like they did in 1988, before Messi is wasted away or bizarrely, he chooses to leave the club?By the end of the year we should have a clearer view of where next the club would be headed and I’ll be writing a follow up to this, explaining in details all the deals that have been done by the Rosell/Bartomeu administration and how they have lined their pockets and that of their cronies while the tenets, ideals, and philosophies that made the great Barcelona withered and decayed right under their nose.Relatedlast_img read more

New Sensation Brian Idowu Faces Sanction For Eagles Appearance

first_imgNew Super Eagles sensation Brian Idowu could be sanctioned after he opted to represent Nigeria. The Amkar Perm of Russia defender made his Eagles debut as an halftime substitute during Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Argentina and scored the third goal in an impressive comeback win for the team however the 25-year old could now lose his nationality status as a Russian because of that.Russia don’t support dual nationality for citizens meaning that he will have to sacrifice his Russian citizenship if he plays for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a competitive game.Idowu, who has been vocal about playing for Nigeria at the World Cup, will first renounce his Russian citizenship before obtaining a Nigerian passport and that means he would lose all the benefits he enjoys as a Russian at his club.According to football rules in Russia, a maximum of six foreign players can only be fielded by a club at once in a league game.If Brian Idowu turns out for Nigeria competitively, his Amkar Perm club will be at a disadvantage due to the fact that they will lose a Russian citizen. February 19, 2020 This weekend’s UFC 229 card from Las Vegas marks the much anticipated return of Conor McGregor, as the Irishman aims to once again achieve what no man has done before and defeat lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.Inevitably the event has lead to overwhelming excitement from the betting sector, with sports fans clamouring to pick a winner of the blockbuster main event. Oddschecker have revealed that when examining the numbers in the week leading up to this Saturday’s fight, they’re seeing 78% more page views this week (Sun-Weds), than they did for McGregor’s last historic UFC contest, which was his clash against former welterweight champion Eddie Alvarez in November 2016. The firm also revealed that the actual amount of money bet on this weekend’s fight has also taking a significant surge, detailing that to compare the same time period, there’s been an increase of 87% in actual bets placed on the fight.Furthermore, in spite of such a long lay off, McGregor is still attracting a plethora of late punting attention, prior to this week, Nurmagomedov was both the bookies’ pick and the punters’, however punters are changing their tune and showing support for the Irish fighter. This week alone, the ‘Notorious One’ has accounted for 69% of bets, substantially more than he accrued in the previous weeks. It’s believed the wave of support is due to the press conference held between him and his Russian counterpart, with a flurry of bets being placed immediately afterwards.Only 26% of bets this week have been placed on Nurmagomedov winning the contest, with the remainder placed on the title bout finishing as a draw.If the line stays the same, this will be the second time McGregor enters the octagon as an underdog, after facing Dustin Poirier as an odds-against shot.Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson commented on the market swing: “There’s been a wave of money coming in for Conor McGregor this week, with punters across the country more than happy to back the Irishman at underdog prices.“Almost 70% of all bets have been placed on the 30-year-old to emerge victorious against the undefeated Russian grappler, signifying a change in support between the pair.“However, bookies are remaining staunch on their decision to call Khabib the favourite, although you can expect McGregor’s odds to shorten as we edge closer to fight night.” Restructured GVC sidelines Oddschecker affiliate services  July 8, 2020 Oddschecker: ‘Unusual circumstances’ fail to hinder Royal Ascot traffic July 23, 2020 Share Sharelast_img read more

Round table – Kambi: The future of sportsbook personalisation

first_imgShare Related Articles Kambi takes full control of LeoVegas sportsbook portfolio August 26, 2020 Simon Noy, Kambi: Revolutionising the bet builder July 20, 2020 Submit Kambi and DraftKings agree on final closure terms July 24, 2020 StumbleUpon Share Some of the leading suppliers to the sports betting industry offered their insights into the future for sportsbook personalisation based on automated customer segmentation, advanced behavioural analysis and predictive AI-driven models. The next round table participant was Kambi, represented by its Head of Data Analytics, David Warder.SBC: What role does pricing and risk have to play in the differentiation of a sportsbook offering?DW: Automation and odds feeds have meant odds served up to players can be fairly homogenised, with operators who are prepared to take a view becoming a rare breed. As players become ever more sophisticated, sportsbooks wanting to differentiate through pricing must employ the very best technology, analytical resources and above all, proven experts working together to take a position while maintaining margins. None of this comes cheap, which is why there is a growing tendency for less sophisticated sportsbooks to follow the odds produced by leading operators and suppliers, which ultimately means they have no control over when they open markets or the ability to produce unique betting content. Naturally, this has consequences for risk management. Without in-house excellence in trading and pricing, operators are obliged to punish anyone who makes the cardinal sin of daring to take top price. At Kambi we aim to leverage the power of our network data and technical capacity to empower our odds teams to produce accurate probability forecasts fed into powerful models to generate odds. Operators are empowered to express themselves through differentiation in paybacks for bet offers by region, with a range of odds boosts and price boosts at their disposal, to ensure they have control of their differentiation in price. This is supported by a market-leading, automated player management solution built on advanced, self-iterative machine-learning technology, which is configured to each operator’s unique expectations delivering bespoke risk management.SBC: How can operators build on their customer analytics to both enhance player experience and drive higher margins? DW: Unleashing the value hidden within the vast quantities of data generated in sports betting requires both an advanced data platform used by experts, and an up-skilled workforce that is fully data-literate. Operators must concentrate on both the capability to supply and consume analytics.Scalable differentiation in a product means manageable personalised experiences, potentially achieved through segmentation, but becoming ever more granular in their application. Identification of the highest value-driving functions of a sportsbook, combined with detailed analytics can direct strategy around cultivation of customers.A deep understanding of behaviour driving key success indicators such as retention and lifetime value will identify the critical components defining different customers’ experiences – these might not necessarily be traditional front-end components, but platform and product performance, availability or integrity. Some customers may be attracted by the look-and-feel, some by the in-play delay and others by the ease of placing multiples through bet builder. In many cases, higher margins should not be the goal, rather operators should focus on finding the optimal margin to maximising revenue.Analytics strategies will only succeed in leading to improved experiences and realised business goals if their maturity continues to develop. While there is value to be gained from descriptive and diagnostic analytics, ensuring expertise and ‘productionisation’ of predictive and prescriptive analytics is key. Combining this with replicable, trusted testing frameworks within a culture that prioritises data-driven decisions provides the base to deliver improved experiences, increased engagement and optimal margins.SBC: How can AI and analytics be used to personalise and tailor the sports betting experience?DW: With ever-increasing data storage and usage capabilities, tapping into the richness of sports betting data and productionising its value will be critical in maintaining a competitive advantage. Customers expect the most efficient personal service, and by definition, this can vary significantly. To enable the future proofed service that customers demand requires more accurate decisions to be made at scale, as close to real-time as possible. Every decision a customer makes (or doesn’t) is another set of data points from which predictions can be generated, or can supplement complex ML-algorithms. From the very beginning of a customer’s lifecycle their experience can be tailored, while integrating further information from product interactions, personalisation leads to a unique experience at the most granular levels. The industry is still some way behind the technology and its application, and would be wise to tread carefully. The complexities of an ever-changing offering, both in terms of the short lifespan of available events and the highly variable pricing, are not easily comparable to classic cases of personalisation. Customers still need to maintain independence and control over the experience – an overly operator-defined experience, strongly pushing customers towards a particular outcome can erode the critical trust in the customer versus operator competitive dynamic.SBC: A lot has been said recently about gamification, what can it do for sportsbook? DW: Gamification is an emerging trend within sportsbook, though it has gained traction in related industries and more widely. The basic premise is to bring gaming mechanics to the product, with primary aims to increase engagement and retention. By exploiting the natural competitiveness of customers, simple concepts such as leaderboards, badges and challenges are clearly applicable in a sportsbook environment. Operators should be mindful that some customers could be turned off by socialising the sports betting experience. No platform has yet harnessed the full potential of gamification, and the elements of a gamification strategy listed above barely scratch the surface of the potential. As an example, gamification can be a powerful tool during the onboarding process. The broader a customer’s view and understanding of the product, the more likely they are to extend engagement. A customer who is educated in all aspects of sports betting and the offering will see more opportunities and would be expected to interact more frequently, taking advantage of the breadth of the product and the depth of their knowledge. As operators’ products continue to evolve and improve, gamification can be a useful communication and conversion tool.As personalisation becomes more and more prevalent, individual customer-specific retention strategies will be more manageable, and gamification can play a significant role in this with tailored offerings delivered in real-time. It is one more tool in the box for operators to differentiate their platform from those of competitors.last_img read more
